CREATION: THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND LES GRANDS BALLETS

As the mainspring of Les Grands Ballets, creation lies at the heart of the company’s mission. Since the arrival of Gradimir Pankov as its Artistic Director in 2000, Les Grands Ballets has focused its energies on creation. Innovating through the production of new works is essential to ensure the growth and longevity of Les Grands Ballets.

This will allow the company:

  • Stand out from the rest, while offering new and original productions that will meet the demands of audiences and international presenters alike;
  • Establish its identity, while expanding its repertoire and contributing to the cultural heritage of Quebec and Canada;
  • Encourage the collaboration of the finest artists, thus ensuring the quality of its productions;
  • Contribute to the socio-economic development of the cultural sector, by creating sources of revenue for dozens of choreographers, designers, artisans and technicians

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

  • For the creation of The Death and the Maiden, 14 400 minutes (240 hours) of rehearsal time in the studio are required per dancer
  • The dancers need 90 minutes of ballet classes per day

  • Each female dancers of Les Grands Ballets can use up to 600 pairs of point shoes per year
  • On average 70 costumes are created for each production, (for Nutcracker, approximately 300 are needed)
  • Gradimir Pankov commissioned 19 creations for Les Grands Ballets in the space of only 14 seasons. The majority of them are still performed in Canada and on international stage 4 choreographies can be simultaneously rehearsed by the 35 dancers of Les Grands Ballets
  • Every year, Les Grands Ballets invites 2companies to perform in Montreal, thus allowing its audiences to discover the masterworks of the world’s finest companies?
