Press Release PDF

Les Grands Ballets are delighted to announce the return of Rodin/Claudel, a neoclassical ballet by Canadian choreographer Peter Quanz, to the Théâtre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts on March 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22, 2014. A commissioned piece that premiered in September 2011, this narrative ballet recounts the torrid romance of French sculptors Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, from the flowering of their shared creative passion to Claudel’s downward spiral into poverty and madness. To represent the burst of creativity that stemmed from their union, and the psychological toll it exerted, Quanz added a 12-member ensemble of six men and six women: “sculptures” that embody the shapes and emotions emanating from the minds of the artists.

“I believe that their respective work influenced each other, and that their relationship intensified the emotional content of their sculpture,” Quanz declares. “Camille Claudel was a tragic figure, a victim of her time and of the men who were closest to her. This is a story of passion, love and betrayal.”

Peter Quanz

Peter Quanz knew he wanted to be a choreographer at age nine. In his first year at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, he was given the opportunity to choreograph for dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company. After graduating in 1999, he danced with the Stuttgart Ballet, but decided to become a freelance choreographer instead. A recipient of the 2005 Clifford E. Lee Award for emerging choreographers, he became the first Canadian to receive a commission from the legendary Kirov Ballet (Mariinsky Theatre, Russia) in 2007. Three years later, he launched his own company, Q Dance.

To date, this Ontarian has created some thirty works for many of the world’s foremost ballet companies, including Kirov Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Hong Kong Ballet and National Ballet of Cuba.

“Rodin/Claudel could become a jewel in the crown of Les Grands Ballets.” (The Globe and Mail)
