Les Grands Ballets will launch the 2013-2014 season on October 10, 2013 with Sleeping Beauty, a radical and subversive retelling of a traditional fairy tale by acclaimed Swedish choreographer Mats Ek.

Created in 1996 for Hamburg Ballet, Sleeping Beauty tells the modern story of Princess Aurora, now a rebellious teen who has fallen victim to the prick of a heroin needle and a menacing drug dealer who has no intention of saving her. Lifted by the stirring sounds of Tchaikovsky and Ek’s signature dark humour, audiences will dive into the many troubling and beautiful layers of the human psyche, exploring death, love, jealousy, revenge and happiness with the troupe’s 20 dancers.

First performed by Les Grands Ballets in May 2009, this stunning work returns to the Théâtre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts on October 10, 11, 12, 17, 19, 24, 25 and 26, 2013.

About Mats Ek

Born in Malmö, Sweden, Mats Ek is the son of actor Anders Ek and acclaimed choreographer Birgit Cullberg, who founded the world-renowned Cullberg Ballet. After studying dance and theatre, he began his career as the director of the Marionette Theatre and the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. In 1973,
he joined the Cullberg Ballet as a dancer before turning to choreography in 1976.

In 1985, Mats Ek succeeded his mother as Cullberg’s Artistic Director and subsequently built his own reputation with startling remakes of such classical works as Giselle, The Rite of Spring, Swan Lake and Carmen. Since 1993, Ek has been a guest choreographer for Cullberg and some of the world’s finest dance companies, including Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris and Compañía Nacional de Danza de Madrid.

“What dancing! Expansive and generous, dizzyingly powerful, this is ballet that transgresses tradition with sparkling humour.” (Le Devoir)

“Comedy, drama, colour and social comment are woven tightly into swift moves that gobble up every inch of stage space (…) Those who see this Sleeping Beauty will never forget it.
” (Montreal Gazette)
