poetry, drama and ecstasy.
A kaleidoscopic look at the extravagances of a pop icon,
whom critics have been quick to identify as the eccentric British singer-songwriter himself, Love Lies Bleeding unfolds in 14 tableaux reminiscent of rock videos. The choreographer’s neoclassical signature colours the diverse dance styles: from Broadway and Las Vegas-style cabaret to rollerblading, street dancing and jive. This technically demanding work is performed to perfection by an essentially male cast set against a multimedia set and sumptuous lighting. Some 150 extravagant costumes—including g-strings and rhinestone cowboy hats!—and 440 accessories, including 60 wigs created for the occasion, adorn this highly colourful and entertaining work created in 2010.
In production for a full year, and then reworked for months following the first performances, this show cost several million
dollars, an unusually high investment for a ballet. Considering its huge success, however, the gamble was well worth it.
